"Virgin - The Sign". Middle of the19th century. Wood, tempera The Virgin with the Child in a medallion on her chest. Such plot "Virgin - the Sign" is one of the oldest images of the Virgin. It has originated from Byzantium, from the IV century. Here is the story of this plot: The icon began to refer to as "Sign" after a wonderful sign of the Novgorod icon in 1170.That year appanage princes, having united, have planned to subdue Great Novgorod. The enormous host has gathered round the city. The people of Novgorod could only pray for the help of GOD. They prayed days and night. Archbishop Novgorod, since the city was surrounded, indefatigably prayed in the Sofia cathedral at the Saviour's icon. In third night he suddenly has felt sacred trembling and then from an icon has distributed the voice, ruling to him to take image of the Saint Virgin and to take it out to the city wall. When the icon was taken out to the city wall and people had confronted it to besiegers, those were not softened by heart and not taught, and have started up to shoot this place of the wall with a clouds of arrows. One of the arrows has got in a sacred face of the Mother of god. And here the miracle has come to pass - the icon has turned itself away from besiegers to the city, and then tears had flowed from eyes of the Virgin. At the same time the great horror has attacked besiegers. They were blinded and began to kill each other. Then Novgorod people, encouraged by a sign, broked a numerous army of besiegers. "The Virgin of Tikhvin". First half of the 19th century. Wood, tempera. Description: the finest image of the Virgin with the Holy Child. The icon of the Virgin of Tihvin is specially honored in Orthodox Christianity; according to the legend, the icon used to be kept in Constantinople for 5 centuries, and just before the invasion of Turkish armies, the icon disappeared from the city, and approximately at the same time it appeared near the lake of Ladoga. The fishermen saw the icon moving over the water. Afterwards, the icon appeared in many places, and finally stopped by the river of Tihvinka, close to the Tihvin city.
